About Our Club

Our club was formed in 1993 and incorporated in 1995 when mountain biking (MTB) in Australia was in its infancy. Since then the club and the sport have gained popularity through advocacy and participation. The Bushrangers MTB Club is a volunteer based organisation run by enthusiasts, for the benefit of promoting and supporting mountain biking across the region.

We do regular rides all over Sunshine Coast and SEQ from Cooloola to Brisbane, in national parks, state forestries and council parks. Check out this website for more information on events, news, and for places to ride.

Go G.I.R.L. Parklands Ride Summary

Times are a- changing…, whilst Ben aka Bushrangers President, took a few Rookies for a ride from the Radar Hill side, we were full house at the Atkinson Rd side entrance of Parklands. This demonstrates women are stepping up and choosing to go to the next level in their riding and what better place to start than our treasured Parklands. Nicci Orr and her girls from Brisbane joined us along with some new and old faces. So after the traditional before the ride photo, 14 of us rode single file to the trailhead.

“Were you sitting down?” “Did you faint?”

Go GIRL Jinker Trails Summary

GoGIRL linked with Nicci Orr and the Brisbane girls for a ride around the Jinker Trails at Bunyaville. We started off at a slower pace than usual from James Drysdale Recreation Park with 15 ladies and picked up Solo Heather on the way (Turns out she raced with me back in the day, small world hey). Kathy and Janine, a couple of local girls joined us too. They were new to the sport so we adapted the speed to suit them giving them riding tips on the way. We began with Wayne’s World which flowed onto WW: new and improved and that is what we found. All the trails were tweaked and were even more fun than the last time. After climbing into Mini Van, we Zigzagged along Dugandan Road to The Jinker Tack via 10 and 1. The climbing and techy sections proved a bit of a challenge to our new riders. They had fun but were a bit puffed.  So at this point they opted to end their ride close to the carpark but promised to join us again soon already making plans with the local girls to join them the next day.

After saying goodbye we went Creekside and took the Original Creek Track. We picked up the pace and were Flickn Sticks to number 6. There was no Carnage on Kokoda but I Love that Hill, it’s only Short Hill. We did the whole Dam Loop in record time mastering The Steps where we stopped to hone our skills. A Policeman checked out our Dirt Racers. Nicci showed us how to jump, it was Jinker Magic. A Froot Loopin time was had by all. Why not join us on our next Mystery tour. Check out our face book page for more details.

Until next time,

Have fun on the trails,

GoG.I.R.L. coaching with Jodie Willet

A lovely group of GoGIRL ladies took advantage of a Bushranger initiative to offer free coaching for them. In fact, it was snapped up, “flickety sticks”, thanks to a grant they had recently obtained.

Non-Bushrangers were welcome too and if they so desired they might have made a little donation on our website (paypal/australian sports foundation). Hint hint! No pressure though!

Don’t worry boys, Ben (our president) and co. haven’t forgotten about you either. At the moment, they are a little busy building trails in Parklands with their trusty volunteers. Just keep an eye out on our website for more coaching opportunities coming later this year, after we have built a flow track and a skills park in Parklands. Yes, you heard correctly, how exciting is that! What a perfect place to have coaching locally. Dreams do come true.

Meanwhile, GoGIRLs woke to the sound of rain. The forecast was showers. The question was to cancel or not. I put a “the coaching is a go” notice on the FB page and set off. I said a prayer to the rain god (Stay up here, don’t rain down there). First we traveled 1.5 hours to Underwood Park where we met Jodie. She was just finishing up with her first group.

Jodie was a great coach

After introductions, Jodie began by explaining the fundamentals of MTBing in a way that was easy to understand by all. I was chosen to model the correct stance on a bike. A considerable amount of time later, (I’m sure it was over 10 minutes) I demonstrated standing, pedals level, heels down, bending at the hips, bottom back and keeping low. I was relieved I had my magnesium levels up. Jodie hadn’t even broken into a sweat holding me up that whole time! At that time, getting a major cramp would have been embarrassing and probably resulted in a pedal in my leg. Disaster averted!

Next we practiced braking to a stop, wheelies and cornering. A lady from Jodie’s last session momentarily interrupted and excitedly reported that she had just done the “Wall of Death”. I was wondering if that was part of our session? Some of the GoGIRLs were wondering what have they had signed up for?

Wheelie practice!

After plenty of skill drills, receiving individual feedback, and asking numerous questions, we headed to the trails. By the way all the girls got gold stars for lifting their front wheel off the ground. Sonja was the expert and gave tips to the rest of us. We kept practicing till we looked like pros or at least we made a promise to keep practicing till we did! I’m pretty sure I heard plenty of squealing when someone had put it all together. Maybe that was me!

The venue had everything close at call; plenty of berms to practice right and left hand turns, roll overs, rocky descents and slabs to climb. Jodie knew where all the teaching opportunities were, because well of course, she designed this section of the place. We rode past Janine Jungfel’s Trial section and marvelled at her brain child and remembered her awesome coaching session too! It was great to see all the ladies nailing the tasks. We didn’t want the session to end so we headed to the skills part and Jodie gave us instructions on how to manual.

Wall of death!

After giving her vigorous thank you’s, some ladies stayed to ride the trails. The trails were great fun and well designed. There were heaps of berms and step- ups to practice what we had just learnt. Soon, we came across the “Wall of Death”. There was a lot of looking and talking of which way to best approach this steeper rocky descent. Luckily I stopped before dropping down to check if I had the right line! Because guess what? I didn’t, in fact it was exactly where NOT to ride. Proceeding would have been nasty. Another disaster averted. Note to self: Look before you leap! Or ride in this case. After carefully noting the entry point again, I put my modulating brakes technique into action and down I went. After the initial going over the edge, it didn’t feel like the Wall of Death. It felt great, no skidding and totally in control. I can’t wait to tell Jodie and organize the next session. Meanwhile in the wise words of Di,

“It’s practice, practice, practice”.

Thanks for coming ladies and I hope you all got something out of it.

GoGIRL Time to Reflect

With the AGM quickly advancing next month, it is time to reflect on our aims and achievements of GoG.I.R.L. (Get Into Riding Ladies).

The key questions are:

  1. Are we getting more ladies into riding?
  2. Do they feel supported riding together?
  3. Are we offering opportunities to grow?

From the squeals and numbers of ladies that turned up to our February GoGIRL  ride in Sugar Bag last Saturday. The answer is a big YES! YES! YES!

Thank you for a fantastic year

The beginning of 2016 marked a significant point as the old club with its strong heritage and foundations was given a fresh coat of paint and some new upgrades. Aside from introducing new branding and backend systems these changes included a revamp of the club's vision, mission, and values. It was these statements in conjunction with the help of our members, committee and community and government supporters that have guided us through a fantastic 2016. But as we shored up the foundations of our club we have also prepared for the future by applying for grants, increasing communication with members, landowners, local businesses and other clubs. With Susie heading up our GoGIRL initiative to advocate women in mountain biking and our efforts to get people riding and maintaining our local trails we have been able to build an interesting narrative. A narrative that highlights our endeavours of being inclusive, engaging and supportive of the local community while demonstrating that we have the big picture in mind - make the Sunshine Coast a premier mountain bike destination. GoGIRLs in Parklands

Parklands, its reputation as a gnarly and technical park is well known. Most ladies avoid riding here for a myriad of reasons. A year on, has anything changed? Personally, my happy endorphins go wild when I do something really hard. You can often hear me screaming for joy. Sorry in advance if you wanted peace and quiet! But I just can’t keep that kind of excitement bottled up. And I have a great need to share this with others. Hence why GoGIRLs started. Kindred spirits know what I’m taking about. That great sense of achievement you feel when you make a particularly tricky section that you have never made before; be it going through a narrow gap through two trees whist climbing around a sharp pinch, (Bee Hive), weaving in and out of the tropical jungle (Cancer tree) or getting over a large log stack for the first time (Beginning of HoChiHo). But is it possible to share this wonderful world of Parklands...

Is Chris Carter’s Method Groovy?

Ben, our Bushranger’s president and I were invited to come and try the “Groover Method” on Friday afternoon to see if it might be something useful for the GoGIRLs (Get Into Riding Ladies MTB riding group). I was happy to attend as I am always looking for tips to improve my riding and then pass these on. Chris began with a backstory on how he came to develop the concept and already I could relate as I personally knew many riders who had injured themselves quite badly and have had to have considerable time off their bikes. No-one likes that! He began by explaining the Core Rules. What Chris was saying all make sense. I had some light bulb moments. You know it when you get it just right, you flow from left to right and you get in the groove! Ha ha! But when you don’t it can be disastrous! I think I have a permanent scar on my left shoulder from when trees...

Chicks In the Sticks Race Summary

What a colourful event! There were feathers, tutus, even some strange looking he/shes! Many ladies got into the spirit of the event, including the GoGIRLs (the pink ladies) and dressed up for the occasion. Once we had cheered on the Little chicks in the Sticks, the chicken nuggets and the Chick-a-dees, we assembles for the mass start!

After the race briefing of important points such as “track right’ means stay to the left whilst the person overtakes you on the right (not go right),“stopping” well we can work that one out but remember not to block anyone’s path. A down arrow means a steep descent and more arrows means it’s even steeper with a dismount area! That had some of the roadies worried, who were thinking I thought this was just a ride for fun. Other women were thinking, it’s slower to walk may as well ride! Good on you Helen, that’s the spirit!

Fun it was, but far from a walk in the park.
