About Our Club

Our club was formed in 1993 and incorporated in 1995 when mountain biking (MTB) in Australia was in its infancy. Since then the club and the sport have gained popularity through advocacy and participation. The Bushrangers MTB Club is a volunteer based organisation run by enthusiasts, for the benefit of promoting and supporting mountain biking across the region.

We do regular rides all over Sunshine Coast and SEQ from Cooloola to Brisbane, in national parks, state forestries and council parks. Check out this website for more information on events, news, and for places to ride.

Tewantin to Cooroy Ride Summary 29/10/2017

Regrouping before Cooroy

I borrowed most of this route from one of Richard Poyner’s group rides. It was a ride good for cruising a decent distance but kept interesting with the occasional bit of single track and the odd tunnel and swamp.

We were mostly all ready to go at 7am and after some quick announcements and a failed attempt to get our Social Coordinator Greg to take his credit card to pay for the mid-ride coffee, we set off. 25 riders (bushies, distinguished guests and new riders Kate and Eric) headed along McKinnon Drive.

We entered the northern reaches of Tewantin National Park. There’s a sneaky single track that runs along the northern parts of the park parallel to McKinnon Drive called the ‘sunken gardens’. Its tight twisty and lumpy surface makes for an interesting challenge and it’s a far more interesting route than the road. Nice work to whatever trail fairy does that work in there, we appreciate it!

Exiting the sunken gardens takes us onto Old Tewantin Road which is a bit of a boring climb however there’s a kinda of a neat creek bed crossing and pinchy climb in the middle that is fun to try and do without ‘dabbing’ (touching the ground with your foot). This took us up to what is known as the ‘worm farm’ which is a trail that goes through Six Mile Creek so there’s usually a water crossing to contend with if it has been raining recently.

A bit further along Ring Tail Creek Rd we hang a left onto Porters Rd, through the Yurol Forest, hopping over Yurol Forest Rd and heading south towards Cooroy via ‘Trail 8’. At this point there were some mechanical issues that were quickly sorted with help from John. The trail has been changed since the Bruce Highway upgrades in the area so it was a bit of exploring for me. We came across a tunnel under the highway with a skinny bridge going through it – I suspect this is used by the various critters around so they don’t drown. We rode through the tunnel and nearby swamp without issue and hopped onto Mary River Rd which took us the rest of the way into the township of Cooroy.

Our large group ended up setting up camp in the middle of town and we all went off and foraged for coffee and food, it was good to distribute our patronage across the many establishments. After coffee we relived our youth and did a couple of quick laps of the local BMX track and then crossed the railway tracks atowards Cooroy Mountain Rd. We climbs over a nice bunch of hills and were presented a great view of Cooroy Mountain. This is where Will developed a puncture so the main group waited in the shade while the tail-end guys assisted him (…by watching).

It wasn’t long before we found ourselves in the familiar territory of Wooroi so we split up into three groups and went various ways through the trail network before meeting at the day use area and heading back to the cars.

Great day, nice ride, rad people, sun was a little bitey.

GoGIRL Sugar Bag Summary

Due to the increasing summer- like temperatures, we met at Ben Bennet Park, Caloundra at the earlier time of 7:15 and I surprised even myself, I was spot on time (which is 15 minutes earlier than the start time). In fact, it should be noted I was the second car there- see Sonja I am full of surprises. Recently at the Wild Women’s Adventure race, Sonja and I found out I’m a wiz at a sling shot and not bad at Slack line, who knew? If you haven't done anything like this before, I can highly recommend it (Adventurre races). Grab another kindred soul and jump right in! Even though we got lost trying to find the bike drop (google maps fault), we made up lots of time in the MTB leg (not surprising) and came in early with nearly a podium finish for our first one together! Note to self : Train for the trekking next time. Going down...

Trails Development Strategy

Hi Folks, As you may know MTBA along with Common Ground Trails are engaging the MTB community around Queensland so as to inform a Queensland Mountain Bike Strategy - if not check out our post about it here, we encourage everyone to complete the survey. Part of their engagement is asking various clubs and trail associations for any documented plans they may have for their regions and if they would like to set up a meeting to talk about them. We're happy to say that we've quickly produced and submitted a draft 'Trail Development Strategy' document and will be speaking with Common Ground Trails early November. We have made our Trail Development Strategy publicly available on our trails page, right under the trail counts. We intend to review this document annually with input from the community and land managers however please don't let that stop you from providing your ideas on new and existing trails across the Sunshine Coast region at any time. Thanks...

Club Night Ride Summary 25/10/2017

Rushing home only to be sneaking out the door, bike in tow, moments later has become a monthly ritual for me and probably the others who came long on the ride this evening.

Eight intrepid souls were ready to go at just past 6pm although that would soon be seven as Boaz had a suspect wheel with a slow leak so he turned back to avoid a walk. Following the usual 10km loop around the western side of Parklands we dodged and weaved through the undergrowth trying to avoid running over the cane toads that were out in force after the rain. Cancer Tree was in top form with both creeks full of water which makes it fun to ride. It’s amazing how well the old tracks hold up to the environment but there’s a few spots that might need some attention.

The grip on the hills was good as the rear tyre of the trusty single speed stayed glued regardless of the strain I was putting on it, only coming unstuck on a ‘baby head’ rock. Personal records gained by the others was further proof of the good post rain dirt and clean rocks.

I managed to collect two orb weavers this ride, luckily for me they’re inclined the drop off you than crawl around. No snakes though, probably killed by the spiders.

Always fun riding at night, suggest everyone give it a go at least once.

Away Rides for 2018

[caption id="attachment_4320" align="alignright" width="300"] Everyone loves a camp fire![/caption] Hey Bushies! As you may have read recently Cortney and I are the new away ride coordinators. For 2018 we are looking at organising around 6 away rides. In the spirit of Christmas giving (or to give you a good excuse to escape for a bit), for the first one, we are planning a camping trip from January 3rd until the 5th. We’ve cooked up a couple of options… listed in no particular order: Mt Joyce near Beaudesert. Camping will probably be at the Liliybrook Camping area. We could ride a day Hidden Vale and a day Mt Joyce. Promisedland near Bundaberg. Camping and other accommodation (for those not keen on the pleasure of an air mattress) is available in Childers. A rather nice benefit of this option is Woodgate Beach is not too far away, so we can go for a swim at the beach after a ride. A refreshing idea for expected...
