About Our Club

Our club was formed in 1993 and incorporated in 1995 when mountain biking (MTB) in Australia was in its infancy. Since then the club and the sport have gained popularity through advocacy and participation. The Bushrangers MTB Club is a volunteer based organisation run by enthusiasts, for the benefit of promoting and supporting mountain biking across the region.

We do regular rides all over Sunshine Coast and SEQ from Cooloola to Brisbane, in national parks, state forestries and council parks. Check out this website for more information on events, news, and for places to ride.

Go GIRL Jinker Trails Summary

GoGIRL linked with Nicci Orr and the Brisbane girls for a ride around the Jinker Trails at Bunyaville. We started off at a slower pace than usual from James Drysdale Recreation Park with 15 ladies and picked up Solo Heather on the way (Turns out she raced with me back in the day, small world hey). Kathy and Janine, a couple of local girls joined us too. They were new to the sport so we adapted the speed to suit them giving them riding tips on the way. We began with Wayne’s World which flowed onto WW: new and improved and that is what we found. All the trails were tweaked and were even more fun than the last time. After climbing into Mini Van, we Zigzagged along Dugandan Road to The Jinker Tack via 10 and 1. The climbing and techy sections proved a bit of a challenge to our new riders. They had fun but were a bit puffed.  So at this point they opted to end their ride close to the carpark but promised to join us again soon already making plans with the local girls to join them the next day.

After saying goodbye we went Creekside and took the Original Creek Track. We picked up the pace and were Flickn Sticks to number 6. There was no Carnage on Kokoda but I Love that Hill, it’s only Short Hill. We did the whole Dam Loop in record time mastering The Steps where we stopped to hone our skills. A Policeman checked out our Dirt Racers. Nicci showed us how to jump, it was Jinker Magic. A Froot Loopin time was had by all. Why not join us on our next Mystery tour. Check out our face book page for more details.

Until next time,

Have fun on the trails,

Our Club Crosses a Milestone Today

[caption id="attachment_3245" align="alignright" width="300"] Thanks to all our members, supporters and sponsors.[/caption] Today is an important day and not because it's the day that the Betamax video cassette was introduced in 1975 or Louis XIV was crowned king of France in 1654. While indeed those events are important, today is special for another reason. Using MTBA data and earlier pre-digital membership lists (carved onto bits of stone etc), we can see that with the current strong growth in memberships our club is now officially bigger than it has ever been. Not only does this show we are a healthy club that ticks the right boxes for our members but it proves that mountain biking is definitely alive and well in the Sunshine Coast. Thanks to all our members, supporters and sponsors over the years. We couldn't of done it without you!...

Mapleton Community Ride Summary – 04/06/2017

Ubajee Walkers Camp lookout

I came to this ride without a specific route in mind so when Will suggested a the route from the Ubajee Walkers Camp to the Lookout track I said done and off we went just past 7:30am. It was a small group today with 12 starting off and 11 making it to the lookout as Nick had another appointment (I know right, what’s more important than riding??). Many of the others were at the club camping trip in Hiddenvale. Since it was a smaller group of good riders the pace was turned up a bit with probably a few less stops than usual.

Di was on her new bike so we made sure to ride every stick and rock strewn trail between the two lookouts. Actually it wasn’t too bad and QPWS have been keeping the access trails clear of debris. Although a few of us risked a stick in the spokes doing a little bit of exploring of a possible shortcut that would have prevented back tracking but it stopped 80m short of lookout trail…

We took the perimeter track around Lynda Garret Park which had quite a few trees laying across it and was slow going. Turning left at the end took us along the cleared access track to the walkers camp. This track is pretty cool as the undergrowth has been cleared but the larger trees left with the track winding between them making for a scenic ride without having to concentrate too much on the track itself.

There were campers at the walkers camp so we made sure to skirt around it to the lookout where we rested up a bit before continuing along the access track towards the lookout road. As with many of the tracks around the area it was a bit up and down and probably a bit more up than we wanted on a community ride but the group handled it without complaint.

The rest of the way to the Oaky Creek Lookout was uneventful and we made good time getting there so we stayed a while to sit sun ourselves on the rocks like a bunch of MTB lizards while enjoying the view on a perfect day. After a few happy snaps we smashed our the way back to the cars for coffee and cake at the Mapleton bakery.

New Trails, New Faces and New BBQ! Today’s Trailcare Summary

The first stage of the Parklands MTB Trails Project is now complete with the opening of the new access track from the Radar Hill Road carpark through to the soon-to-be skills area.

After our sausage sizzle we grabbed some tools and headed into the new beginner’s trail (Stage 2). Matt from Trailworx has roughed in a good chunk of the new trail so today’s job was to go in with handtools to help shape it up and do the drains. Ben took a team to polish off the newly opened access trail, my team (aka “Alpha Attack Team Sharpened Rakehoe”) started from the end of the new work and worked backwards while the others started from the top and worked down so we met in the middle.

We made good progress with clearing drains, angling back the high edges and building some rollovers to get over some unavoidable big tree roots. Still a bit more work to do but it’s looking good.

We had some new faces today so a big hello to you and as always a massive thanks to everyone for all the help!

New Access Trail Opening with BBQ (Sat 03/06/2017 – 12pm)

[caption id="attachment_3352" align="alignright" width="217"] Freshly compacted and raked - you could eat off it![/caption] Hey everyone, The new access trail is pretty much finished and OK to ride so QPWS has given the go-ahead to open it up this weekend. So tomorrow (Saturday 12noon 03/06/2017) we'll have a sausage sizzle lunch at the old carpark area where the skills park will be (just ride the access trail to the end and we'll be there). So come check out the trail, have a snag and drink and let us know what you think. If you want to stick around for the trail care work afterwards then that's fine too. Remember, this trail needs a name so feel free to add your idea to the list ("Traily McTrailface" anyone?). Michael Johns Club Secretary ...

Beerburrum to Woodford Ride 28/05/2017

The first of the long distance winter rides taking advantage of the cool dry days. Expect more of these challenging but worth while rides between now and when things start heating up again.

The fog was still rising over the highway and the temperature reading outside was a fresh 13°C. After being thankful for the modern marvel known as a heater I went back to the critical decision of whether I wanted a bacon & egg roll or a ham & cheese croissant when we arrive at Woodford. Still undecided I arrived at the Mathew Flinders Park rest area where I found Rod and Murray getting ready and a couple of cars that looked like they took advantage of the free overnight stay (be smart, don’t drive tired).

I began to unload the bike as the rest of the 14 riders trickled in and also started to get ready. Here Gary from Bendigo asked if he could tag along which is always fine for MTBA members. It was just before the ride off that I realised that I hadn’t copied the route onto my Garmin… so John and Mike managed to improvise the route – thanks guys!

The improvised route took us along Caves Road, around the northern side of Mt Tunbubudia over to Twin View Rd. Riding along the road for a little before heading back into the forestry where we met our first set of climbs. Reaching the top we followed a mix of forestry access tracks and a bit of single track and passing a recently felled forestry area which was kinda eerie in that it looked like a war zone with the morning mist still drifting around.  We then popped out onto George St, Woodford, completing the first leg of the ride.

We b-lined straight for CJ’s Pastries for a well earned coffee for around 30 minutes. I decided on the croissant. We were lucky that we just beat the motorcyclist rush hour as there was a line out the door and motorbikes everywhere before we had finished.

From Woodford we headed back via Old Cove Rd before turning down Dunning Ln and back into the Forestry. A few more climbs later we took a rest to watch a 4WD negotiate a technical climb which was kinda interesting, video of it available here. We then skirted a hill via some single track and then headed over to the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout. It was along this section where Gary from Bendigo suffered a catastrophic rear derailleur failure with both the cage and hanger getting bent up in the rear wheel. A bit of bush mechanics and we had upgraded Gary’s bike to a single speed.

We did the usual happy snaps of the views from the lookout and then headed back to the cars to call it a day.

A long ride with a fair bit of climbing but it was worth it for the great weather and views.

Impromptu Trail Work Update – Saturday 27/05/2017

My new boots got dirty :/

A few of us went in today for an impromptu trail-care to attack some problem drainage areas on the new access trail. In addition to creating/improving all the regular style drains we’ve tried a new style of drain to catch and divert water away from clay-heavy areas before they got waterlogged (I drew a diagram to help explain it). We put these hidden “T” drains throughout the trail and on that particularly boggy berm.

On top of the drainage work we also got the compactor over the new work and shaped the berms and trail that couldn’t be done last week due to things being too muddy.

Nice work Ben, Will and Rob!

Update (Monday 29/05/2017)
Matt and Eugene went in on Monday to check our work and made a few changes. They have added more rocks to the water crossings (so we don’t need to do it anymore – yay!). The big berm above the water crossing needs a drain on it as well a few soggy spots a little further on.

The new causeways that were put in on the slope heading down to the old carpark/skills area have been removed and the trail will need to be reshaped and cleaned up again.

Parklands MTB Trails Project Update 23/05/2017

Trailworx have finished their work on stage one (access trail) and will be continuing on with stage two (beginners loop) in the coming weeks. Two trail care days in and we’re almost finished the access trail. The volunteer works have been made difficult with the wet weather and the particularly boggy clay sections. As we want these new trails to last we’re aiming for a high quality finish and that will take a bit longer so your patience and support is appreciated.

Stage One (Access Trail) Remaining Items:

  • Drainage
  • Digging/surfacing of two berms (1 x southern face/carpark side, 1 x northern face/container side)
  • Additional sandstone armouring of two creek crossings
  • Any other items identified by QPWS

All trail capping will be done at a later date, on an as-needed basis – this includes using rock armoring and road base.

Also note that QPWS have organised maintenance work on Double Dab and Rock-a-dial. Those trails should be okay to ride by this weekend but please abide by QPWS signage and trail closures.

Next trail care day is at 1:00PM Saturday, June 3rd will be focusing on the start of the beginners loop and any remaining work left on the access trail.
