About Our Club

Our club was formed in 1993 and incorporated in 1995 when mountain biking (MTB) in Australia was in its infancy. Since then the club and the sport have gained popularity through advocacy and participation. The Bushrangers MTB Club is a volunteer based organisation run by enthusiasts, for the benefit of promoting and supporting mountain biking across the region.

We do regular rides all over Sunshine Coast and SEQ from Cooloola to Brisbane, in national parks, state forestries and council parks. Check out this website for more information on events, news, and for places to ride.

Wooroi Ride Summary 21/05/2017

The weather and trail conditions couldn’t have been better. We split into two groups, 14 in one and 8 in the other, with the fasties speeding off up Cross Cut to take advantage of the hero dirt on Snake and Spectator while the casual cruisers meandered up Birdwing to start off with Milkmaid and inched our way up Cross Cut to do the Snake/Bloodwood combo and then splitting up to do Secrets or Turn 10 + Secrets. A little bit of confusion in the fast group as some split right after Snake and others went straight. Then the casuals picked up a few of the fasties and… everyone had fun in the end anyway.

Today we were joined by a couple of locals, Cortney and Martijn, and a Gold Coast visitor which my sieve of a brain has forgotten his name – thanks for tagging along guys.

Brunch was had at Cafe Doonan as usual.

Distance awards goes to Pete – 126km and Andrew – 80km. They must hate sleeping.

Thanks goes to John for leading the fasties group and I lead the casual group.

More Slippery than Buttered Jelly – Parklands Ride Summary – 14/05/2017

Ride map and elevation

Despite some of the trails being a bit slippery in places Sunday’s Parklands ride was awesome! The rain held off, the temperature was perfect, the company was great, so yeah, pretty awesome!

Ben led the group down Phoenix first (also awesome) and then up Red Dog. We then went over and toodled around the Meadows for a bit until we got to the Komine fire road. We then went down T-Track (my new favorite track) and right down through Cancer Tree. A tree was down next to one of the creek crossings which blocked the normal line to take through the rocks, so that made things a bit of a challenge. We then did the Gumby track and a part of Road Rage.

We then rode up Ho Chi Ho (much better going down it Ben, just saying!). By this time we were getting pretty buggered so after that tedious fire road climb we were keen to head back to the cars. Andrew provided his super-secret-not-too-hard selection of trails to get from the middle gate across to Phoenix. Nice work Andrew and thank you M1 trail!

I forgot to take photos but luckily new rider Lumir took some good ones which he has provided for this summary. Thanks Lumir!

Thanks for the ride everyone. See you next time!

GoG.I.R.L. coaching with Jodie Willet

A lovely group of GoGIRL ladies took advantage of a Bushranger initiative to offer free coaching for them. In fact, it was snapped up, “flickety sticks”, thanks to a grant they had recently obtained.

Non-Bushrangers were welcome too and if they so desired they might have made a little donation on our website (paypal/australian sports foundation). Hint hint! No pressure though!

Don’t worry boys, Ben (our president) and co. haven’t forgotten about you either. At the moment, they are a little busy building trails in Parklands with their trusty volunteers. Just keep an eye out on our website for more coaching opportunities coming later this year, after we have built a flow track and a skills park in Parklands. Yes, you heard correctly, how exciting is that! What a perfect place to have coaching locally. Dreams do come true.

Meanwhile, GoGIRLs woke to the sound of rain. The forecast was showers. The question was to cancel or not. I put a “the coaching is a go” notice on the FB page and set off. I said a prayer to the rain god (Stay up here, don’t rain down there). First we traveled 1.5 hours to Underwood Park where we met Jodie. She was just finishing up with her first group.

Jodie was a great coach

After introductions, Jodie began by explaining the fundamentals of MTBing in a way that was easy to understand by all. I was chosen to model the correct stance on a bike. A considerable amount of time later, (I’m sure it was over 10 minutes) I demonstrated standing, pedals level, heels down, bending at the hips, bottom back and keeping low. I was relieved I had my magnesium levels up. Jodie hadn’t even broken into a sweat holding me up that whole time! At that time, getting a major cramp would have been embarrassing and probably resulted in a pedal in my leg. Disaster averted!

Next we practiced braking to a stop, wheelies and cornering. A lady from Jodie’s last session momentarily interrupted and excitedly reported that she had just done the “Wall of Death”. I was wondering if that was part of our session? Some of the GoGIRLs were wondering what have they had signed up for?

Wheelie practice!

After plenty of skill drills, receiving individual feedback, and asking numerous questions, we headed to the trails. By the way all the girls got gold stars for lifting their front wheel off the ground. Sonja was the expert and gave tips to the rest of us. We kept practicing till we looked like pros or at least we made a promise to keep practicing till we did! I’m pretty sure I heard plenty of squealing when someone had put it all together. Maybe that was me!

The venue had everything close at call; plenty of berms to practice right and left hand turns, roll overs, rocky descents and slabs to climb. Jodie knew where all the teaching opportunities were, because well of course, she designed this section of the place. We rode past Janine Jungfel’s Trial section and marvelled at her brain child and remembered her awesome coaching session too! It was great to see all the ladies nailing the tasks. We didn’t want the session to end so we headed to the skills part and Jodie gave us instructions on how to manual.

Wall of death!

After giving her vigorous thank you’s, some ladies stayed to ride the trails. The trails were great fun and well designed. There were heaps of berms and step- ups to practice what we had just learnt. Soon, we came across the “Wall of Death”. There was a lot of looking and talking of which way to best approach this steeper rocky descent. Luckily I stopped before dropping down to check if I had the right line! Because guess what? I didn’t, in fact it was exactly where NOT to ride. Proceeding would have been nasty. Another disaster averted. Note to self: Look before you leap! Or ride in this case. After carefully noting the entry point again, I put my modulating brakes technique into action and down I went. After the initial going over the edge, it didn’t feel like the Wall of Death. It felt great, no skidding and totally in control. I can’t wait to tell Jodie and organize the next session. Meanwhile in the wise words of Di,

“It’s practice, practice, practice”.

Thanks for coming ladies and I hope you all got something out of it.

Ewen Maddock Dam Community Ride Summary – 07/05/2017

We had a big turn out for Sunday’s ride despite the cold, cloudy conditions. I thought I’d lead a small group over those initial steep hills and I’m not sure why I did that now. Maybe I just wanted to watch the guys on e-bikes toodling past me with their snide grins. But after this abrupt heartstarter the group rejoined and cruised through the dam at a crisp pace.

There wasn’t much water on the trails so we took a risk and took the the sneaky shortcut over Addlington Creek. The trails were only slightly damp in areas but the creek was definitely full so we had to put our gymnast hats on and tiptoe over a conveniently fallen log.

We all got to the Ferny Forest trails where most of us had a coffee and a bite to eat at the BrewHaHa coffee van. While others kept going to get some extra loops in. Ferny Forest was riding beautiful, such an amazing little gem that place.

Thanks for the ride everyone. I hope you all had fun!

National Volunteers Week 2017

The Bushrangers simply would not exist today if it wasn't for the contributions made by the many volunteers over the years. We rely upon volunteers to serve on our club committees, lead rides, coach, advocate, run races, help with social events, and build and maintain the trails we love. The club also depends on other volunteer organisations such as Suncoast Community Legal Service and Connecting Up for free or low cost services. Also those who volunteer their assets like land, BBQs, tools, skills and knowledge. Please join us in thanking all of the volunteers who have helped the club become what it is today as part of National Volunteer Week. Sleepy Snakes, Angry Ants and Weighty Rocks – Parklands Trail-care summary 06/05/2017

Hey everyone,

Really, really, really heavy rocks

We had a massive turnout for trail care today and the freshly cut-in access trail was polished off nicely within 3 hours.

The two creek crossings were armored with rock (really big, heavy ones!) and the single track and berms were shaped and packed down.

Highlights and experiences of the day were:

  • A really distracted snake didn’t realise that a vibrating plate machine or “Wacker Packer” was almost on it.
  • One team accidentally discovered a jumping ant nest. That caused a bit of excitement!
  • If you act really incompetent at cooking the BBQ, Sonja will take over and do it for you.
  • I was a bit stingy on the sausages… sorry about that everyone!

Thanks to Eugene from QPWS and Pete from Trailworx for your help and a big thanks to all our volunteers.

If you want to be alerted to future trail-care events via email and SMS then fill out the small form (link below) and add your details to our trail-care database. You don’t have to be a club member so let anyone to sign up here too – https://goo.gl/forms/HTV55pc5IEzWPXAj1

Thanks again everyone, wear your trail-care badge with pride!

Parklands MTB Trails Project Breaks Ground!

Project information sign is up

Hi Folks,

Last week Rob and Eugene organised the relocation of the trail care container from its secret never to be disclosed location to the ‘old car park’ which will become the skills area. Please keep an eye on it and report any evidence of tampering. Moreover Michael and I posted up a project info sign at the Radar Hill Road car park to let other visitors know about what’s going on (but seriously, who doesn’t visit this glorious website??).

Today Eugene (QPWS), Michael (club secretary), Pete (Trailworx) and myself met at Parklands to go over the next 8 months of work. Starting off at car park we walked the access trail (stage one) to the proposed skills area and up to proposed flow trails starting points and then up to the ‘Ant hill’ section of road rage.
