About Our Club

Our club was formed in 1993 and incorporated in 1995 when mountain biking (MTB) in Australia was in its infancy. Since then the club and the sport have gained popularity through advocacy and participation. The Bushrangers MTB Club is a volunteer based organisation run by enthusiasts, for the benefit of promoting and supporting mountain biking across the region.

We do regular rides all over Sunshine Coast and SEQ from Cooloola to Brisbane, in national parks, state forestries and council parks. Check out this website for more information on events, news, and for places to ride.

Clean Up Australia Day 2018 Summary

Bloody fatbikers!!

Hey Bushies’

33 awesome volunteers came out to do a bit of trail care and to help with the Clean Up Australia day activity at Parklands today. We filled two large bins with general waste and recycling and also dragged out around 5 ute loads of other rubbish too big for the bins. Tyres, engines, hot water systems, nappies (eiww!), car panels, batteries, TVs. It was both sad and amazing that all this junk just gets dumped in our parks.

As for the trail care there were two jobs to do with one team heading in to fix up the damage done to the new blue trail. The blue flow trail and the top of Road Rage trail hadn’t had time to harden before last weeks torrential rain soaked it through and turned it to slush. The other team grabbed the whipper snippers and did some much needed vegetation management on T-track and Lower NZ.

Great work today everyone, as always your help was most appreciated!  A special thanks to Dave for cooking the BBQ – the sausages where superb! If anyone wants a Clean Up Australia Day certificate to brag how awesome they are, just let me know.

Thanks for the write up by Tessa Patrick in the Nambour Weekly and to Clean Up Australia Day for the bags and gloves and to Sandie Johnston and the Sunshine Coast Council for the big bins, rubbish pick up and mowing the grass along Radar Hill Road for us.

Club Secretary

2017 MTBA Queensland Club Volunteer of the Year Award Acceptance Speech

Recently I was awarded the 2017 MTBA Queensland QLD Club Volunteer Award. It was a quite the surprise and I am both honoured and humbled to receive this award. Since I became President our club has become a multifaceted entity delivering on many fronts such as coaching, women's advocacy, trail development and bringing back racing, all while supporting the wider mountain biking community. During these years I have witnessed many contributions made by our committee and membership and it is a particularly great feeling seeing new riders develop into competent riders who then begin to share their knowledge with others. If I am a good volunteer, it is because of the a great committee and membership behind me. I would like to call out to the club secretary and my brother, Michael, as without his help the club would not be what it is today. The same can be said of Craig, Susie, Rob, and Greg for their work as treasurer, women's...

The 2018 MTBA QLD Club Volunteer of the Year Award goes to…….. Ben Johns!

So shiny!

So yeah, our President just won the QLD Club Volunteer Award in the 2018 MTBA Achievement Awards!

No idea why really. Why award someone who took over a club that was on the ropes and then grew it by 300% in 3 years to be the biggest MTB club on the coast. Who then spent all of his free time upgrading and modernising the club’s look and administration systems so he could spend more time on trails, grants, woman’s advocacy, training, rookie rides and trying to kickstart the club’s racing pedigree while also dealing with the conflicts and earning the trust and strengthening the relationships with the local riders, community and landowners. Maybe no one else was nominated?

But seriously Ben – good work mate! You totally deserve this reward and I’m sure lot of others think so too. I remember falling off my chair when you told me you had volunteered for President 3 years ago and I thought you had bitten off way too much. You absolutely proved me wrong!

Google My Business – Club Events

Hi Folks, Another one of those boring IT updates but this is in relation to an item that came up in the membership survey - the website calendar isn't very mobile friendly with the event details bubble clearing its contents when you try and scroll the screen. The developers have been pestered about it but they're not answering. It's still the best calendar for our purposes so we're kinda stuck with it for now. To make things a little more bearable for mobile users I have set up a script that populates the club's Google My Business (GMB) presence with our calendar events. The GMB posts feature became available in June last year but you could only manually post things. Recently they updated it so now you can programmatically create/edit/delete posts. So now when you search for 'bushrangers mtb' or something similar on Google, you'll see the club's Google My Business box with all the club's information, and now event posts. This shows...

GoG.I.R.L. Coaching Begins

Geoff showing correct body positions

Awesome morning was had with Geoff Foxx from Hit Bikes and some of our GoGIRLS as we started   the roll out of 6 coaching sessions funded by Bushrangers through a grant we obtained last year for this purpose. There were smiles all around as we had fun learning new skills in the beautiful and purposefully built graded trails at Parklands, Nambour.

First we warmed up on the green trail that led to the skills area. There we learnt how to position ourselves on our bikes. Sounds basic but experienced riders know this is fundamentally really important. When you get this wrong it can end really badly, possibly with injuries, which leads you to precious time off your bike or a trip to hospital. No one wants that. Maybe you have experienced being too far back or forward on your bike, next minute you’re on the ground because your front wheel has washed out on a berm or some how your steed has thrown you off! There’s a saying, “I went over the hangers” for a reason because plenty of people have done it.

It was a friendly and relaxed learning environment

What I loved about Geoff’s method is I was taught how to work it out myself. I didn’t need anyone saying you’re too high or too far back. So now I can self- check every time I get on my bike whilst I’m riding. That alone felt empowering. After this initial lesson, he put one of us in front to check out all of our riding. Apparently I went too fast but I was enjoying myself so much I forgot we were at a coaching session. But that is very much Geoff’s style. And it fits our club’s motto, “We love to ride”. To my defense, we were on the Big V (well that’s what I’m calling it till it gets its new name) and all the pretty ferns distracted me.

After popping our front wheels over a log a few times, we were more than ready and super keen to ride the recently opened new blue trail. It was so much fun at the end some of us went back for another spin. From the feedback already coming in, everyone came away from these first coaching sessions with Geoff Foxx from Hit Bikes extremely happy and thankful for this Bushrangers initiative. The increased numbers prove that interest in women’s riding is mounting. Last year we filled two groups, (which were postponed due to rain) and this year five sessions were not enough. How exciting is that. Soon you will see bigger numbers of ladies sporting their new GoGIRL jerseys and holding their own in the forest. I for one can’t wait to go back now and practice some of my new skills. Tomorrow can’t come soon enough. See you on the trails.

Exercising in Hot Weather

Hi Folks, It's looking like we're up for a pretty warm week so we wanted to remind people to be mindful of things like dehydration and heat stroke when out riding. So please take a look at our earlier post about Riding in the Heat. Parklands MTB Trails Project Update – NEW BLUE TRAIL IS OPEN – 09/02/2018

[caption id="attachment_6276" align="alignright" width="169"] Stair feature towards top of trail[/caption] Hi Folks, I'm happy to report that the 'blue' trail has been given the okay and is open for riding just in time for the weekend. As with any trail that you haven't ridden before please give a slow roll or two first. Note that the skills area is still closed due to it being too wet so please let it dry. The Road Rage remediation is well underway and we anticipate it to be completed soon if the weather holds off. We'll have a trail opening BBQ next weekend once it's all good to go!...
