Sunday’s ride was in Sugarbag again and as normal we started at the Caloundra Aquatic centre. Although this time there was no over-protective magpie with murder in it’s eyes so that was nice.
Due to the camping trip in Bayview and other riders doing their own thing in Wooroi we had a smaller group of 12 including new riders, Marty and Pete.
What may have been a tough slog through sweltering heat turned out to be a rather pleasant cruise thanks to a cool reprieve from the heatwave. 18 riders showed up for a mini adventure through Ringtail Forest from Tewantin.
First off we warmed up our legs by heading along Mckinnon Drive before heading into the dead straight access road into Tewantin Forest. We rode through the Sunken Gardens, which is a tight and twisty set of single tracks snaking along to Old Tewantin Road which we begrudgingly exerted our way up (or in Boaz’s case gleefully levitated up on his new Giant XTC Advanced 0 29er hover-bike). Did you know that this area is home to the endangered swamp stringybark tree which you won’t find anywhere else in Australia or the world – pretty special place we live in.

So this week’s night ride was more of a dusk/sunset ride due to the sun going down a lot later at the moment. We didn’t need to put our lights on until half way through the ride at the bottom of Cancer Tree.
The weather had cooled off enough to not be soul-suckingly disgusting but the humidity was still up there.

The Dirt Fest MultiSport Festival is run in conjunction with the TreX Cross Triathlon Series where we add even more off road action with XC Mountain Biking, Trail Running, Fun Runs and events for the entire family. Hello ‘Rangers!
So I noticed that 3 was the lucky number for Sunday’s ride e.g. 3 hours of riding, 3 lookouts visited, 3 litres of sweat loss!
After the last few hot days it was a pleasant surprise to see the weather app saying it would be below 30ºC. However I forgot to account for the 3000% humidity level. I could’ve thrown a fish in the air and watched it swim away.

We parked at the Glasshouse Mountain footy club and rode alongside Steve Irwin way towards Mt Tibrogargan. We worked our way along to the first lookout and quickly checked out the view. It was eerily silent so I assumed the birds had all drowned or something.
We then proceeded to the Jack Ferris Lookout (obviously named after the guy who invented the Ferris wheel). Here we stopped to enjoy the view and have a rest but we didn’t stay long. It was just too still and clammy, we had to keep moving to keep cool. Also there was like 3-million mozzies attacking our faces.

Here's a blurb from their 'About' page: Trailforks is a mountain bike trail database & management system for riders, builders & trail associations. Users can contribute data and then local trail associations have the control to approve and curate the data. Ensuring the best, latest and accurate data. The service provides a handy database of trails to ride along with suggested routes and surrounding points of interest in return for your ride information. This ride information assists with tracking usage for each trail and therefore gives an idea on what maintenance is required. Quite a few trail networks around Australia use this application so it's a great resource to have if you're travelling with your bike and it has the added benefit of helping keep the local trails maintained. Haven’t rode in Parklands all year! (haha I kill me).
While we dawdled around the end of Atkinson Road waiting for the late arrivals to get ready Will brandished his latest trail weapon – a black and yellow Intense Carbine (Intense with a capital I, although it was pretty exciting). Yielding it with a deftness reserved for the most skilled of riders he sprinted into the forest to surmount the prevailing chaos of rocks, sticks, and the occasional bandicoot. Our regular readers might remember a summary from November that tried to poetically describe (rather beautifully if I do say so) how hot it was that day. Well I believe last Sunday’s ride was hotter than that. However it was a stealthy heat because you only felt it when you stopped moving, like WHAM! and your standing in a melted slush puddle that was once your will to live. But while you were moving it was OK so like Dory says in Finding Nemo – “Just keep swimming” (that’s a little pop culture reference to show how “hip” we are to all the young kids).
The rider turnout was pretty good considering it was the day after New Year’s Eve – no one smelt like grog or a bathroom floor (well no one apart from me anyway but I blame my Old Spice cologne). We started from Maddock park as usual but instead of the typical ride through the dam trails, Dularcha railway tunnel and then coffee at either Mooloolah or Landsborough we went along a sneaky shortcut from the dam trails over to the Ferny Forest trails. The shortcut meant we only had to be on the Steve Irwin Way for about 100m and we could be on the inside of the safety barrier away from the cars. It worked great and no one died so that’s a good win I guess.
