About Our Club

Our club was formed in 1993 and incorporated in 1995 when mountain biking (MTB) in Australia was in its infancy. Since then the club and the sport have gained popularity through advocacy and participation. The Bushrangers MTB Club is a volunteer based organisation run by enthusiasts, for the benefit of promoting and supporting mountain biking across the region.

We do regular rides all over Sunshine Coast and SEQ from Cooloola to Brisbane, in national parks, state forestries and council parks. Check out this website for more information on events, news, and for places to ride.

What’s next for MTB on the Sunshine Coast?

Hey Folks, Yesterday we sent out a post giving an update regarding the grants we currently have in place. This money will pay for new trails and training which was the most requested items in last year's member survey. However we need to look to the future and keep applying for more grants so we can keep the ball rolling and grow mountain biking within the Sunshine Coast. So we ask you to start thinking about some potential projects that we can use when applying for grant money. Things like new trail ideas or maybe training programs for different rider groups e.g. beginners, women, children. The project has to be sellable to all stakeholders, be able to show how it will benefit the community and be in line with the club's mission and abilities. Some potential project ideas that are floating around at the moment are: Marathon length trail right around Parklands Bottle 'n Glass or Mapleton downhill trails Great Rides Trail Project - Glasshouse to...

Trailforks Trail Management System

Hi Folks, We've started a mini-initiative to get all the local trails registered with Trailforks and we'd like you to be involved. What is Trailforks you ask? Here's a blurb from their 'About' page: Trailforks is a mountain bike trail database & management system for riders, builders & trail associations. Users can contribute data and then local trail associations have the control to approve and curate the data. Ensuring the best, latest and accurate data. The service provides a handy database of trails to ride along with suggested routes and surrounding points of interest in return for your ride information. This ride information assists with tracking usage for each trail and therefore gives an idea on what maintenance is required. Quite a few trail networks around Australia use this application so it's a great resource to have if you're travelling with your bike and it has the added benefit of helping keep the local trails maintained. Once you start recording your rides with Trailforks (aka Ridelogs) every now and then Trailforks will ask...

Thank you for a fantastic year

The beginning of 2016 marked a significant point as the old club with its strong heritage and foundations was given a fresh coat of paint and some new upgrades. Aside from introducing new branding and backend systems these changes included a revamp of the club's vision, mission, and values. It was these statements in conjunction with the help of our members, committee and community and government supporters that have guided us through a fantastic 2016. But as we shored up the foundations of our club we have also prepared for the future by applying for grants, increasing communication with members, landowners, local businesses and other clubs. With Susie heading up our GoGIRL initiative to advocate women in mountain biking and our efforts to get people riding and maintaining our local trails we have been able to build an interesting narrative. A narrative that highlights our endeavours of being inclusive, engaging and supportive of the local community while demonstrating that we have the big picture in mind - make the Sunshine Coast a premier mountain bike destination. With...

Keeping it Positive – Trail-care in Conservation Areas

[caption id="attachment_2067" align="alignright" width="300"] Damaged Grasstree at Ferny Forest[/caption] Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS) have asked the club to help redirect the over-enthusiastic trail fairies onto permitted trail-care activities coordinated by the QPWS and the Sunshine Coast Trail Alliance (SCTA). In addition to the tree cutting and unsafe technical trail features the particular concerns are as follows: The Spare Parts trail that runs alongside Radar Hill Road in the Parklands Conservation Park. Even though it's an amazing effort the trail is unsanctioned and simply unsustainable and has been closed by QPWS. Overzealous pruning of sensitive plants during trailcare activities. Specifically the cutting back of Grasstrees (Xanthorrhoea) and ferns within the trail networks. This isn't a maintenance requirement and vegetation removal must be supervised by a ranger. 2017 will be a big year with new trails being built and existing trails undergoing maintenance. The Bushrangers, SCTA and QPWS are working closely towards quality outcomes for the local MTB community and other trail users and the above activities only...

Trail Standards, Professional Certification Framework & Curriculum, and Peak Body to Represent Trail Builders

The MTBA established a project working group at the 2015 Australian MTB Summit to investigate options for the following: National standards/guidelines for the design and construction of MTB trails; Development of a professional certification framework for trail builders and curriculum program; Establishment of a peak body to represent the Australian trail building industry. The working group has completed option papers for each of the above areas/projects and are seeking feedback from the following constituents. Professional trail builders; Clubs, private promoters and trail care alliances; State and territory land management agencies; and the MTB community. The working group is keen to receive feedback from you.  Here is a link to the generic survey and the 3 option papers which form the basis for the survey questions.  The option papers will need to be read prior to completing the survey.  The survey closes 27 November. Survey: https://goo.gl/forms/OGD04qrkhXAYRVom2 Option Papers: http://www.mtba.asn.au/trails/ The results of the survey will be summarised and presented at the 2016 Australian MTB Summit and steps put in place...

Sunsets and Shoulder Injuries – Ferny Forest Night Ride Summary (19/10/2016)

So last Wednesday's night ride was a particularly adventurous one that was filled with an amazing sunset, a heap of mosquitos and unfortunately a call to the ambulance. [caption id="attachment_1875" align="alignright" width="300"] Almost ride off time![/caption] At 7pm we had 8 riders ready to ride at the Ferny Forest carpark (across the road from the Big Kart track on Steve Irwin way). In the future we will probably start the ride up towards the real estate agent carpark where the nearby street lights make things easier. The mozzies were bad but a bit of repellant helped and once you got moving it was fine. We rode at a brisk pace trying to get warmed up but of course we had to stop on the shore of the dam to get some pics of the sunset as it was pretty spectacular that night. So riding at night obviously adds another layer of complexity to the already risky sport that is Mountain biking. Relying on lights limits the distance you...

HQ Plantations Permit

The club now holds an annual permit covering our activities within the local state forestry areas managed by HQ Plantations. Our conversation with HQ Plantations began earlier in the year and has resulted in a permit that covers all local forestry areas. We're looking forward to working closely with HQ Plantations to increase recreational activities in the state forests by leveraging existing trail networks and hopefully creating new ones. Great things can be done within a plantation area - the Kowen Forest Pine Plantation in the ACT that plays host to the Kowalski Classic and Mont 24hr events is one such example. We like to thank Angela, Stephanie and Julie from HQ Plantations for assisting us with the permit process. The forestry areas covered by our permit are: Amamoor Beerwah Beerburrum West Beerburrum East Yurol Ringtail ...

Success! Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grant

On Friday the 23rd of September the club received a bank transfer from the QLD Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) for $24,587.50 meaning that we were successful in our round 89 application earlier this year (April/May)! The funding will go towards race equipment (e.g. timing mats, tent and course marking stuff) and various trail care tools such as a brush cutter, soil compactor, drill and extra hand tools. This will likely take us a couple of months to organise, procure and document but we're keen to put them to use as quickly as possible. Thanks goes to the QLD Government: Department Justice and Attorney General, Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation and to club secretary, Michael, who wrote and submitted the grant application on behalf of the club (and begrudgingly left out the fat bikes for all members idea). Also thanks to our membership who allow this club to exist and apply for these grants to do the things we all want to do. The initiatives for...

Parklands MTB Trails Project – Grant Submissions Done!

Today we submitted our applications for the Get Going Clubs grants. These are in addition to the recently submitted Gambling Benefits Fund grant and a Sunshine Coast Regional Council grant. Thanks to everyone who helped us and thanks to the trail builders who submitted quotations for the work. A big thanks goes to the following people who helped strengthen our application with their letters of support: Ryan Guest (99 Bikes) Ben O'Duhring (Castara Empresa) Daniel Yujnovich (Crankwork Cyclery) Steve Ossedryver (CORCA) Hayden Lester (D'Aguilar Range Cycling Club) Marty Webster (EnPlusOne) Susie Hume (Go-GIRLs) John Searston (Have Fun Tours) Tony Vella (Nambour Alliance) Bruce Campbell (Nambour Christian College) Greg Hale (Nambour Rotary Club) Royce Vandeleur (Palmwoods Physiotherapy) Melissa Taylor (Parkrun) Mal Keeble (Sunshine Coast Cycling Club) Kurt Martin (Sunshine Coast Regional Council) Shaun Lauder (TAFE Queensland) ...
