About Our Club

Our club was formed in 1993 and incorporated in 1995 when mountain biking (MTB) in Australia was in its infancy. Since then the club and the sport have gained popularity through advocacy and participation. The Bushrangers MTB Club is a volunteer based organisation run by enthusiasts, for the benefit of promoting and supporting mountain biking across the region.

We do regular rides all over Sunshine Coast and SEQ from Cooloola to Brisbane, in national parks, state forestries and council parks. Check out this website for more information on events, news, and for places to ride.

Help us name Parkland’s new trails!

[caption id="attachment_6005" align="alignright" width="290"] Will the black trail stay as "Tazer" or will something better come along?[/caption] You know when you already know someone's name but when you meet them for the first time you think something like "They didn't seem like a Gary"? Well that's why we've waited a bit before putting the call out for suggestions. Hopefully you've now ridden the beginner's loop and the black trail and have learnt their quirks or their 'personality' and can confidently offer a suitable name. For example, would "Loop of Death" work OK? or is it more of a cheeky "Colin"? It's up to you. Post your suggestions on Facebook or email us at info@bushrangers.org by Sunday 31st. The names will be run by QPWS to check they align with their policies then we will put the shortlist to the vote next week! Details: There needs to be a name for the green level beginner's loop and the black flow trail There is another...

Merry Xmas! Parkland’s New Green and Black Level Trails ARE OPEN!!

One of the log rides being built on the black trail

Hey Everyone,

As of this afternoon the green beginner’s loop and the black flow trail will be completed and open for riding.

So we are cancelling this Sunday’s Yandina/Cooloolabin ride and instead heading into Parklands to ride the newly opened Green loop and the Black flow trail.

To celebrate this awesome Xmas present for all of us we are going to setup the BBQ and put some food and drinks on for anyone who wants to come and ride the new trails on Sunday morning.

Time: 8am Sunday 24/12/2017
Location: Shipping container at the old carpark (start of the new beginners loop). Just follow Rocky Creek Forest Road up from the Radar hill carpark (https://goo.gl/maps/mtnsQxguUVu).

Thanks to the hard work of QPWS, Trailworx and our volunteers and another big thanks to Queensland Department of Sport and Recreation and Sunshine Coast Council for the grants that made this possible.

SAFETY NOTE: The new black trail has big berms, table tops, rock gardens, step downs and jumps. So give it a slow run first to check things out.

Ferny Forest Trails UPDATE 13/12/2017

Hey everyone, [caption id="attachment_4650" align="alignright" width="210"] Ferny Forest is closed after the weekend's storm[/caption] So the Ferny Forest trails copped a hiding from that big storm on the weekend and due to all the trees down the QPWS has had to close the trail. We've just heard from QPWS today that the rangers are currently in the park clearing the trees and they may have to organise a volunteer day next week to repair the water damage to the trails so stay tuned if you can help. QPWS will let us know when the trails are open again. Michael Johns Club Secretary...

Bushrangers Weekend Roundup (9th/10th December 2017)

Hey Bushies,

Well that was a big weekend on a few different levels. Not only was the weather a bit extreme but we also had our end of year BBQ and Movember prize draw at Paul’s trails on Saturday and our regular club and rookie rides on Sunday morning.

Miles and Todd finishing a lap

We were fretting about the weather all week after already having to postpone the BBQ once already. But although it was a bit hot and humid at 1pm it cooled down nicely later in the arvo and the storms held off until well after 6. We had a great turnout of members and guests and since the trails had drained well and were riding beautifully some of us got a good bit of riding in and got to check out all of Paul’s new additions to his trails.

Congratulations to Peter Bigaila and Graham Reeks for winning their prizes for our Movember challenge and congratulations to all the winners who won something in the prize draw. I also hope you were pleasantly surprised that contrary to vicious rumours there was actually none of my underwear in any of the prize bags.

On the Sunday Nambour hadn’t had that much rain so we figured Parklands would be OK to ride. This was not case as Parklands must of copped all the rain that Bli Bli did and it was rather wet in there. So we cut the ride short and avoided all the new work and tried to stay on the trails that had drained quickly. There may be a trail care day in Parklands on Saturday so we could probably have a team go off and work on the drains in the problem areas – stay tuned for more information.

Thanks to Paul and Trish for being great hosts (and providing cheesecake), Greg for doing another great job on the BBQ and to everyone else who came and had a good time.

See you on the trails!

Parklands MTB Trails Project Update 03/11/2017

Black track as seen on Trail Forks

Black track as seen on Trail Forks

Rain and some resource constraints have hindered progress on the new trails going into the Parklands Conservation Park but we’re progressing once again with Trailworx bringing out the big guns with a 5t excavator flanked by two smaller ones to get things back on track.

The downpour we had the other week highlighted various drainage issues along the beginners loop that the last trail care session crew started fixing (thanks guys!). Since then a few of us have been scraping flat the tyre ruts and reworking the drainage but there’s still lots to do, particularly the rutted berms.

Plan is to get a bunch of the sandstone rocks cut and transported to each location needing rock armouring – drainage dips and the bridge ramps. Road base capping will be spread over the lower sections of the beginners loop to make them more resilient to ruts and generally harder wearing.

Upcoming features of the black trail, apart from the usual berms and rollers, are natural drops, a natural rock garden, a S shaped berm with a jump transition in the middle and some big rollers at the end so you can send it for the spectators.

The black trail will need close attention to detail. Trailworx will point out what’s left to be do, the trick is to not undo anything they have set up as that will either cause them to revisit or will cause premature trail degradation.

Next up will be the ‘blue’ trail, then the skills area. Then the remediation (of sections) of existing trails such as Road Rage and Anger Management. Once those are finished and the grants acquitted the new QLD MTB Strategy will hopefully be ready for us to review and align our trail strategy against – then we’ll start the cycle again by doing up detailed plans, getting quotes, applying for grants, and if successful, build more trails.

So please keep an eye on the calendar for upcoming trail care days – they’ll be coming along fast during the next 3 – 4 months.

Don’t forget that you can check out Trail Forks for updates on trail conditions and additions and our Trail Care page for the rest.

Trails Development Strategy

Hi Folks, As you may know MTBA along with Common Ground Trails are engaging the MTB community around Queensland so as to inform a Queensland Mountain Bike Strategy - if not check out our post about it here, we encourage everyone to complete the survey. Part of their engagement is asking various clubs and trail associations for any documented plans they may have for their regions and if they would like to set up a meeting to talk about them. We're happy to say that we've quickly produced and submitted a draft 'Trail Development Strategy' document and will be speaking with Common Ground Trails early November. We have made our Trail Development Strategy publicly available on our trails page, right under the trail counts. We intend to review this document annually with input from the community and land managers however please don't let that stop you from providing your ideas on new and existing trails across the Sunshine Coast region at any time. Thanks...

Trail Count Update

Damaged crossing

Hi Folks,

Quick update on the counters. This afternoon I collected the trail counts for September/October making four months worth to analyse. Parklands looks like it currently receives around 550 mountain bike visits a month although it’s still very early days and we expect that to trend up and down over the seasons. Also we’ve made the weekly totals available on our trail care page with an adjustable period (click the date range in the top right corner), I’ve included it below so you know what it looks like.

While collecting the counts I checked a few of the new trails to find they’re holding up well given the heavy rain this week. There’s a few parts that have suffered damage that we’ll try and get to during trail care tomorrow (8am, Radar Hill Rd car park) if it’s not raining too much.

Trailworx didn’t get a chance to continue work at Parklands this week because of the rain so they’re aiming for mid next week if the weather is good.

It finally rained! But please don’t ride on muddy trails

Our Department of Raindancing, Astrology and Clipless Pedals has just reported we have had 120mm of rain at Parklands in the last 2 days. This is GREAT news for the new trails in Parklands as it means all that dust will be packed down and hardened (and we can fix that loose berm along Rookie Road). However if they get ridden, even while slightly wet, we'll end up with a chopped up surface that will need to be scraped smooth and it'll go dusty again - so please, please, please avoid riding the new trails (or any trail for that matter) until they're nice and dry. Instead of riding on our awesome trails maybe do some of the following: Service your bike - top up the tyre sealant, clean the chain, grease your bearings, replace that old emergency energy gel in your bag or just simply sit and look at your bike - when was the last time you two had a...

Parklands MTB Trails Project Update 02/10/2017

Hi Folks,

Time for another project update!

Trailworx has completed their work for stage two, the beginners loop, and Ranger Eugene from QPWS has completed the bridge. We’re just waiting on the sandstone to be deposited around the loop so we can organise a trail care day to dig them into the dips and make ramps for the bridge. Once this is done the loop can be opened and named.

Next up, and Trailworx have already started, is stage three which is the two ‘progression’ tracks from the top of the hill (where Cancer Tree starts) down to where the container is. There’s been a bit of a delay while the 5 tonne excavator gets repaired so we hope they can get cracking towards the end of this week or next week.

This rain has been long overdue. I walked over Rookie Road checking drainage and inspected the bridge and surrounding sections that had the worst dust/powder – all looking good but still some dry powder that hadn’t soaked through yet – another day like this and it’ll be good. Once it completely dries out the ‘loop should become a nice hardpack surface like Rookie Road.

Highlights

  • Beginners loop mostly completed – just needs a sprinkling of sandstone
  • Progression tracks started, things should get back underway soon
  • Mid-project acquittal should be completed in the next week or two
  • Skills area detailed planning started
